Lepidoptera Type Material from the National Museum of Costa Rica: Holotypes

Abstract

A total physical review of the holotype specimens of Lepidoptera deposited in the Entomological Collection of the National Museum of Costa Rica was carried out. A total of 457 holotypes were found, representing 21 families and 89 genera, all of them in perfect conservation conditions.

Introduction

The entomological collection of the National Museum of Costa Rica (NMCR) grew considerably when its Department of Natural History (DHN) assumed the biological collections of the National Institute of Biodiversity (NIBio) in 2015, according to the Executive Decree of the Republic of Costa Rica 38882-MCJ-MINAE-MAG-MICITT. In that year the DHN received more than 3.5 million specimens of different orders of insects, the largest collections being those of the orders Coleoptera (with more than 950,000 specimens) and Lepidoptera (with around 600,000 specimens). As a result of the National Biodiversity Inventory in the different Conservation Areas of Costa Rica, new species of Lepidoptera were found, which were described by national and foreign curators, and whose holotypes, for the most part, are deposited in the MNCR collection. Currently, the collection of holotypes continues to increase as a result of collections in specific localities.

The list presented in this work corresponds to the first catalog of holotype specimens of lepidopterans. The purpose of this catalog is to list and make known to the scientific community the holotypes of lepidopterans kept by the National Museum of Costa Rica.

Methodology

A detailed review of the literature was carried out in order to properly verify each specimens and ensure that it was correctly entered into the database. This system verification was carried out using the DHN database in Specify 7.

Finally, from the bibliographic review, information was extracted from the following articles:

Results

It was found that until June 2024, a total of 457 holotypes of the order Lepidoptera are kept in the insect collection of the National Museum of Costa Rica. These are distributed in 21 families and 89 genera.

The families that presented the greatest number of holotype specimens were Blastobasidae with 183 (40%), followed by Autostichidae with 107 (23%) and Depresaridae with 33 (7%). The most diverse genera were Glyphidocera (107) and Hypatopa (51).

The oldest holotype of Lepidoptera deposited in the MNCR collection dates back to 1984, and corresponds to the subspecies Morpho polyphemus catalina, collected by Eugenio Corea and Isidro Chacon in the Rincon de la Vieja National Park and published by both researchers in 1984.

Most of the Lepidoptera holotypes deposited in the MNCR were collected by parataxonomists, who worked for the INBio in different localities of the National System of Conservation Areas of Costa Rica (SINAC); among them are Gerardo Fonseca and Calixto Moraga; Specialists such as Daniel Janzen, Eugenie Phillips, Bernardo Espinoza and Isidro Chacon also contributed to this field work.

The researcher who described the largest number of Lepidoptera species was David Adamski, from the Smithsonian Institution, in the United States, with 289 species, which represents 63% of the total specimens listed in this catalog.

Discussion

The type collection of lepidoptera is in a very good state of conservation, and it is also confirmed that the genital dissections are in perfect condition, some on fixed sheets and others attached to the specimen.

Likewise, when confirming the information in the Specify 7 database, it was confirmed that the complete information of the specimen is complete and available to the public without missing data.

Although there is a project to digitize the specimens and make the images of this collection available to the public in the future, any researcher can make a personal request for the images and they will be generated.

Conclusions

After this review, the following is concluded: A. The type collection of Lepidoptera is in perfect condition. B. The database contains the correct information for each specimen and is available to the public through the following link: C. The collection has not yet been photographed, but images of the specimens can be requested.
