Abstract

The Theory of Evolution, as conceptualized by Charles Darwin, is regarded by some as humanity’s top one or two greatest scientific discoveries [1,2]. In his own day, Darwin was referred to as a “Naturalist” [3]. Today, due to his observational and experimental work [4], he would be viewed as an experimental biologist. Insights from a biological perspective offer a vantage point different from others in science. A biological outlook is particularly important to understand what it means to be alive, conscious and emotional. Whether something is alive or not is the domain of biology. Whether an entity has consciousness is the domain of neurobiology, a subset of biology. What comprises an emotional response is within the domain of neurophysiology, a subset of neurobiology.
