A 12-year-old girl who developed profound respiratory and cardiac failure following smoke inhalation and severe carbon monoxide poisoning that required extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for 5 days after which time the patient was extubated and discharged home with no signs of neurological sequelae. Although rarely described, the early use of ECMO support improved gas exchange from severe hypoxemia and shock while preserving end-organ function.
