Abstract

Coronaviruses cause respiratory and intestinal infections in humans and animals; being that most coronavirus infections in humans are caused by species of low pathogenicity, leading to the development of symptoms of the common cold, however, can eventually lead to serious infections in at-risk groups, the elderly and children. Prior to 2019, two highly pathogenic and animal-derived coronavirus species (SARS and MERS) were responsible for outbreaks of severe acute respiratory syndromes.
