Abstract

Lichens are found on every landform and have a history of use as food, medicine, dyes, livestock feed and other fields. The pharmaceutical potential of lichens is high and several companies are now attempting to commercialise these unique agents. The secondary metabolites that lichen produces have a wide range of biological functions, including antibacterial, antiviral, antitumor, antioxidant, antiherpes, allelochemical, insecticidal, and allergenic effect. The purpose of this review was to systematically evaluate the literature on the biologically active secondary metabolites of lichen.
