Biography

Avneesh K Singh is an Immunologist with a Ph.D. from India and postdoctoral research at Vanderbilt University. His research is on histo-compatibilities in kidney transplantation and the role of natural killer T cells in autoimmune diseases. Using a pre-clinical pig-to-baboon model, He can test genetically engineered (GE) pig hearts and optimizing immunosuppression regimens for Cardiac Xenotransplantation. He co-authored research papers on the longest survival of heterotopic (945 days) and life-supporting orthotopic (9 months) GE pig hearts in baboons, demonstrating that inter-species heart transplantation is feasible. Based on these findings, the FDA approved his compassionate used extended access (EA) application to transplant a GE pig heart into a human heart failure patient. Surgeons and scientists, including him, performed the first clinical cardiac xenotransplantation from a GE pig to a human with nonischemic cardiomyopathy, a "medical breakthrough" experiment. The first GE pig heart transplant recipient survived for two months, and the study was published in The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). He also published the results of his demise due to xenograft dysfunction or failure in The Lancet. He is investigating the role of natural regulatory T cells in cardiac xenotransplantation.
