Enrique M Aburto Fernandez was born in Mexico City on November 10, 1964 where he grew up and obtained a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the National University of Mexico (UNAM) in 1989 followed by a Master of Veterinary Science from the same institution in 1995. He attained board certification status from the Mexican Council of Certification in Veterinary Anatomic Pathology. After that, he entered the graduate program at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) in Canada and completed a PhD degree in Anatomic Pathology in 2000. He has taught numerous courses of veterinary pathology to undergraduate DVM students for 18 years at UNAM, at UPEI from 2008 to 2016, and at the WCVM (University of Saskatchewan) since 2017. He has also taught a number of graduate students and contributed to the training of many anatomic pathology residents since 1990. He has actively participated in diagnostic services as an anatomic pathologist (surgical pathology and postmortem examinations on animals) at the above mentioned Institutions. Stemming from his diagnostic experience and research activities, he have offered 42 presentations (and collaborated in 30 more) at professional meetings and published numerous scientific articles and case reports in refereed journals and conference proceedings. In addition, he wrote 5 book chapters regarding veterinary pathology. He has developed research on neoplastic pathology and the mechanisms of copper-induced liver damage, and collaboratedin diverse research projects. More recently, he attained board certification status from the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) in 2017.
