Biography

Rajendra Gyawali, is a Professor of Pharmacognosy at the Kathmandu University, Department of Pharmacy, Nepal. He received his MSc Botany in 2001 from Tribhuvan University, Nepal. He completed PhD in phytochemistry and biotechnology from Chosun University, Republic of Korea. He also accomplished his postdoctoral research in cancer biology from Jeju National University, Korea. He has a blend understanding of botany, pharmacognosy, phytochemistry, ethnopharmacology, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical sciences. He is specialized in traditional herbal medicine, bringing classical knowledge to laboratory, and translating into products by developing herbal tablet, capsule, ointment, cream, syrup, drink etc with therapeutic strategies. He emphasize on a multidisciplinary approach to study compound isolation, pharmacological evaluation, herbal formulation, product development, and standardization of medicinal plants. He also have good knowledge on gamma-irradiation technology for sterilization and preservation herbs and spices. He was holds the skill on major scientific instrumentation for phytochemical analysis. He is specialized in Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS), Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC), Column Chromatography (CC), isolation of biologically significant natural products, standardization of herbal drugs, method development, pharmacological characterization of natural products, and bioassay techniques to evaluate natural products. Prof Gyawali has been awarded the Science Award-2015 by Nepal Academy of Science and Technology for the innovation of herbal formulation which can be used to minimize the threat of cancer disease. Similarly, he also awarded with the Third World Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) award for the year 2008 in biology for his finding on sterilization of Nepalese medicinal plants by using gamma-irradiation technique. He was awarded with the ‘Nepal Vidhya Bhusan–Ka in 2008, Ministry of Education and Sports, Government of Nepal and Best Poster Presentation Award’ in 2006 Korea-Japan joint symposium by Korean society of food preservations, Korea. He has received several research grants from university grants commission (UGC), NAST/ADB, KU-NTIC/IRDP, and many other funding agencies. Prof Gyawali has more than 150 research publications, a book, book chapters, review articles in reputed journals.
