Maria Iannolo is an orthopedic trauma surgeon at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY. She treats fractures in patients of all ages, with particular interest complex peri-articular fractures. She specializes in treating fractures that do not heal or heal incorrectly. Iannolo also has areas of interest that include surgical and non-surgical options for acute and chronic joint pain. She has an interest in the treatment and prevention of fragility fractures through early detection and management of osteoporosis. She is board-certified in orthopaedic trauma. She is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association. Iannolo completed college at Cornell University magna cum laude and graduated medical school at Georgetown University School of Medicine. She completed residency at Upstate Medical University and completed a trauma fellowship at Strong Memorial, University of Rochester School of Medicine. Iannolo has research interests that include developing methods to improve the stability and biology of fracture repair. She has studied the forces across the intact clavicle during glenohumeral range of motion. She has investigated the optimization of antibiotic administration in the treatment of open fractures. Iannolo has studied methods of determining the need for arterial embolization in the setting of pelvic fracture. An additional biomechanical study she has performed concerns the forces across the subtalar joint after calcaneus fracture. She is currently working on methods to improve drug delivery to fracturesites in order to expedite and improve fracture healing.
