Biography

Gopalakrishna Pillai received his B.Pharm(1965) and M.Pharm(1967) from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, India and MSc and PhD(1984) from the University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver, BC, Canada. He was on the faculty of the College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Manipal, India, as a professor of Pharmaceutics, at the Jordan University of Science and Technology, Jordan and at the University of the West Indies, Trinidad as professor and Director of the School of Pharmacy, UWI. He was instrumental in transforming the department of Pharmacy in to a School of Pharmacy in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of the West Indies in Trinidad and bringing about a number of significant changes in Pharmacy education. While in Trinidad, he also served as a member of the Drug Advisory committee, Ministry of Health, Government of Trinidad & Tobago, an honorary appointment by the Minister of Health. He represented Trinidad at the PAHO/WHO sponsored conferences on Pharmaceutical education in the Caribbean in Barbados, Bahamas, Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Montevideo (Uruguay). He supervised the research work of several post graduate students (M.Pharm & M.Phil and PhD). His research area include nanotechnology-based nanomedicines for targeted drug delivery of anticancer agents, anti-inflammatory agents and metal chelating agents; developing analytical methods (high resolution Gas chromatography with capillary columns, HPLC)for drug analysis in biological fluids; analysis of enantiomeric mixtures for study of stereospecific drug disposition and evaluation of bioequivalence of generic drug products. While In India, he also worked as a consultant to a pharmaceutical company for the bioequivalency evaluation their generic products. He has been a recipient of several research grants from various agencies, has presented several papers in international conferences and has many publications in peer reviewed journals. He served as chairman of the organizing committee for the third and fourth Annual International conference on Nanotechnology and Applications held in Sullivan University College of Pharmacy, Louisville, Kentucky, USA and is the editor of Advances in Nanotechnology and Applications, volume 3 and 4, published by the Center for Nanotechnology Education, Research and Applications, SUCOP, Louisville, KY. He is currently a professor of Pharmaceutics at Sullivan University College of Pharmacy and is a member of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of the Sullivan University System that oversees the protection of Human Subjects participating in research conducted at the University.
