Jacob Thorp graduated from both PTA and PT schools in 1996 and 2001, respectively. In February 2006, Dr. Thorp passed his certification to be called a certified manual therapist (MTC) from the University of St. Augustine. Culminating his formal education, he received his DHS from the University of Indianapolis, 2007. His dissertation was a retrospective analysis on the post-operative outcomes of patients who underwent TMJ arthrocentesis surgery and compared patients both with and without fibromyalgia. Dr. Thorp earned his OCS in 2013 and CMTPT (dry needling) in 2017. He is an item writer for ABPTS and lab instructor for Myopain Seminars. Dr. Thorp joined the physical therapy faculty at East Carolina University (ECU) in 2007 where he is the lead orthopedic instructor. Teaching responsibilities include the content related to the spine and TMJ regions as well as manual therapy and chronic pain. Dr. Thorp was the founding chair of the Orthopedic SIG for the North Carolina APTA chapter. He is currently on the nominating committee for the Pain SIG. He has presented at a national, state, and local meetings on topics ranging from marketing to TMJ management to manual therapy. He has been published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, JOSPT, Journal of Oral & Facial Pain and Headache, and Pain Medicine. He has also co-authored the three chapters, dedicated to the spine, for the 6th edition of Kisner’s and Colby’s Therapeutic Exercise book and updated the same chapters for the 7th ed.
