Biography

Antonios Giakountis studied Agriculture at the School of Agricultural Sciences, department of Crop Sciences and Rural Environment, University of Thessaly (Greece, 2004). As an undergraduate student he holds two scholarships and one award from the National Scholarship Foundation of Greece for academic excellence. He performed his PhD studies with a fellowship for PhD research (Max Planck Community and the Graduiertenkolleg program) in the group of Prof. George Coupland at the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding research in Cologne and holds a PhD in Molecular Genetics from the University of Cologne (Germany, 2008). He has performed his post-doctoral research on small non-coding RNAs and Epigenetics at the group of Prof. David Baulcombe (Lasker award, Nobel Prize nominee) at the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom, 2011). Since 2011 he has shifted from plant to mammalian research and has worked as an independent post-doctoral researcher at the Biomedical Science Research Center “Alexander Fleming” on the role of long non-coding RNAs in stem cell homeostasis and malignant transformation of the intestine. On 2017 he was elected Assistant Professor in Molecular Biology and Genomics in the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology at the University of Thessaly where he currently continues his research on the role of long-non coding RNAs and cancer.
