Biography

Dr. T. Karuppudurai is currently working as a DBT-Ramalingaswami Fellow (Senior Assistant Professor) in the School of Biological Sciences at Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, India. He obtained his PhD (Biology & Molecular Genetics) degree from MKU. During his PhD, he studied the dispersal patterns, mating strategy and genetic diversity of fruit bat Cynopterus sphinx using mark-recapture, radio-telemetry, PCR based RAPD and microsatellite DNA markers. To carry out behavioral and neural circuit studies in genetically trackable animals, he joined as a postdoctoral fellow at National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, MD, USA and began to use Drosophila as a model. During his postdoctoral fellow training, he developed a single-cell transcript profiling method and used this method to determine the usage of neurotransmitters and receptors and the sign of synaptic transmission in molecularly identified neurons and connections in the Drosophila visual system. His research group currently uses both bats and Drosophila as model system and his research interest includes bats behavioural ecology, molecular genetics, molecular biology and Drosophila genetics and molecular neuroscience.
