Biography

Michalakis Savva has graduated from the University of Pittsburgh, School of Pharmacy under the guidance of Dr. Leaf Huang in 1998. As a graduate student his research was focused on lipid and polymer interaction with cultured tumor cells, plasmid DNA and other smaller nucleic acid molecules. His early work as a principal investigator was focused on a priori design of pH-sensitive gene delivery system and provided few molecular descriptors, such as molecular elasticity, for lipid-mediated transfection activity. He was a tenured Professor at Long Island University until 2010.He is currently of Professor of Pharmaceutics at South University, School of Pharmacy at Savannah, Georgia. In 2006, he started a new initiative of research by applying his biophysical expertise in the study of Camptothecin-based molecules. He applies concepts in physical chemistry to assess experimental system properties, predict drug molecular properties, bring to light novel formulation strategies for optimum delivery of therapeutic molecules, quantitatively rank carriers based on stability and activity performance, rationalize carrier selection and provide a mechanistic explanations into the improvement of delivery systems. In addition to his research in drug delivery, he conducts theoretical research on the broad topic of Mathematical Pharmaceutics including Pharmacokinetics.
