Biography

Dr. McArthur pursued his undergraduate degree in molecular biology at the University of Edinburgh in 1992. Following that, he embarked on his doctoral studies under the guidance of Prof. Jean Thomas at the Department of Biochemistry in Cambridge, UK, completing his PhD in 1996. Throughout his university journey, he gained insights into how the physical makeup of genomes affects their functionality, which inspired him to explore innovative methods for diagnoses and treatments. As part of his research on the impact of epigenetics on thalassemia, he took on a research fellowship through the European Union at the University of Crete from 1996 to 1998. Subsequently, he became a fellow at the Department of Haematology, University of Washington until 2000.
Based on his research findings, he played a crucial role in establishing a biotechnology company called Regulome. This company developed a platform to identify new disease markers, and he served as the Director of Science. Additionally, his investigations into chromatin structure revealed its analogous significance in microbes, informing and facilitating intricate genetic decisions. As a Principal Investigator at the John Innes Centre until 2013, he made significant breakthroughs in controlling bacterial gene expression. These advancements paved the way for the creation of two spin-out companies, Streptech and Procarta, to capitalize on the potential biotechnological applications and therapeutic uses, respectively.
Currently, he holds the position of a Professor at the University of East Anglia. He has pioneered innovative approaches to engineer microbiota, aiming to modulate the connection between the gut and organs. These endeavors have focused on suppressing chronic inflammation, which plays a pivotal role in multimorbidity.
