Biography

Tomoko Hayashida has obtained her M.D. and PhD degree from Keio University Medical School in Tokyo, Japan, and completed her residency in Internal Medicine. She continued on fellowship in nephrology and served as a nephrologist /chief in dialysis centers in several institutions affiliated with Keio Medical School. In her initial days of research career, she studied mechanisms of high blood pressure, with particular focus on insulin resistance and Na-H exchanger, using a rat that are obese and has leptin receptor mutation. She moved to United State in 1997 and is currently a research associate professor of Northwestern University and Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago. Her research goals are to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms of progressive kidney disease. In close collaboration with Dr. Schnaper, she has explored a complex signaling regulation that modulate tissue fibrosis in kidney, as transforming growth factor beta –stimulated extracellular matrix production as an in vitro model system. Her current research interest includes how resident interstitial cell undergo phenotypic changes under disease condition and facilitate fibro genesis in kidney.
