Charles A Khamala is a Senior Lecturer in law (since 2016) and the Academic Leader of the Criminal Justice and Security Management Programme at Africa Nazarene University Law School. Prior to this, he lectured at Kabarak University Law School (from 2011). He holds a Ph.D. in Law from the Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour (France, 2015), LL.M. (University of London, 2006), LL.B. (University of Nairobi, 1990) and Postgraduate Diploma in Law (KSL, 1992). Dr. Khamala has practised for 29 years as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya and is on the International Criminal Court List of Counsel, a member of the Association of Defence Counsel Practicing before International Courts and Tribunals and the Legal Aid Scheme of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights among others. He was a 2023 Themis Laureate, jointly won the 2020 Platform Magazine’s C.B. Madan Award for supporting constitutionalism and the rule of law, served at the Faculties of Law of KU Leuven (Visiting Scholar, 2018) and Rhodes University (Andrew W. Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellow, 2016). His doctorate is published as Crimes against Humanity in Kenya’s Post-2007 Conflicts (Wolf Legal Publishers, 2018). Besides appointments to the Criminal Justice Committees of the EALS (2023) and the LSK (2018-22), Dr. Khamala is a member of numerous Editorial Boards in Kenya and Indonesia. He is widely published on international criminal law, criminal law and procedure, corporate and white collar crime, and human rights in recognised journals. His current research focuses on atrocity crimes.
