Biography

Mark Barash is an Assistant Professor and co-coordinator of the Forensic Science program at San Jose State University (CA, USA). In his current role at the SJSU, Dr Barash teaches forensic science curriculum, performs research on various aspects of forensic genetics and supervises undergraduate and post-graduate students. He also holds an Honorary academic position at the University of Technology Sydney (Australia) and a primary scientist in "GATACA", a company providing expert consulting services in criminal and civil matters related to forensic DNA analysis. Mark Barash has earned his PhD in Forensic Genetics from Bond University, Australia. His research focused on the genetics of craniofacial morphology and predicting externally visible traits from a DNA sample. His work has been recognized at the international level through several awards and peer-reviewed publications. After graduation he has continued for a post-doctoral fellowship in the Center for Forensic Science at the University of Technology Sydney, where he was involved in multi-disciplinary research, teaching forensic science curriculum and co-supervising over 15 undergraduate and graduate students. Prior to academic career Mark Barash served as Reporting Officer in the rank of Chief Inspector in the Division of Identification and Forensic Science (DIFS) of Israeli Police for 9 years. During his Police career, he analyzed biological evidence from hundreds of criminal cases, including robberies, sexual assaults, homicides and terrorist attacks.
