Biography

Dr. Liu started his position of Assistant Professor of Neuroscience at University of Connecticut of Health in 2012, and joined the Department of Neurology at the University of Texas McGovern Medical School in 2015. His research focuses on immune responses to cerebral ischemia and sex Difference in stroke. Microglial activation is a key element in initiating and perpetuating inflammatory responses to stroke. Microglial responses are either pro-inflammatory (M1) or anti-inflammatory (M2). The two distinct phenotypes of microglia potentially provide a therapeutic avenue that selectively enhances M2 and/or inhibits M1 activation. Another research direction in his lab studies the sexual dimorphism in ischemic stroke. Stroke is a sexually dimorphic disease throughout the lifespan. Apart from hormone’s effect, chromosomal effects also contribute to the stroke sensitivity, especially in neonatal and geriatric stroke. Studies in this lab have found neurons in the ischemic brain of different sex not only die of different molecular pathways, but are also subject to sex-specific immune responses. These exploratory studies will lead to better understanding of sex-specific mechanisms in stroke and will help us identify and optimize biological targets for therapeutic intervention.
