Biography

Lahooti is Principal Scientist and Conjoint Lecturer teaching Evidence-Based Medicine. His main research focus is on Molecular Genetics of Thyroid Eye Disease (Thyroid Ophthalmopathy) at Nepean Clinical School, University of Sydney. He and Professor Jack R Wall published many articles on Autoimmune Thyroid Disorders and developed a unique laboratory test, which is found to be useful by ophthalmologists and endocrinologists to manage patients with various eye and thyroid disorders. He educated in United Kingdom and Norway. He received BSc in Medical Laboratory Sciences from Cardiff Metropolitan University, Cardiff, South Wales, United Kingdom in 1978, MSc in Biochemistry and PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology (Molecular Endocrinology) from the University of Bergen, Norway in 1986 and 1991 respectively. He received a post-doctoral fellowship to work with Professor Malcolm G Parker in Department of Molecular Endocrinology, Imperial Cancer Research Fund, in London researching genetics of estrogen receptor in breast cancer cells. After completion of post-doctoral fellowship than was employed by Norwegian Cancer Research Society as Research Fellow working with professors Asbjorn Aakvaag and Thor S Thorsen. In 1996, moved to the University of Kentucky in Lexington, USA, as a visiting scientist and than in 1997 moved to Australia. He was employed as a Research Officer with department of endocrinology, Sir Charles Gairdner hospital, Western Australia, Discipline of Pathology, University of Tasmania, Research Scientist with Department of Pathology, Royal Victoria Infirmary, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, United Kingdom, Senior Research Officer with the department of haematology and blood diseases, St. Vincent Hospital, Sydney (Garvan Institute of Medical Research). In 2002, took up a Senior Research Officer/Research Fellow position with Department of Genetic & Metabolic Research Unit, the Children Hospital at Westmead working with Professor John Christodoulou and received a Conjoint Lecturer title from University of Sydney, Faculty of Medicine, Discipline of Paediatrics and Child Health, the Childrenâ Hospital at Westmead. He supervises Honours, Master, PhD students, and Post-doctoral Fellows. He is Member of Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District Scientific Advisory and Human Ethic Committees., Western Sydney Local Health District Institutional Bio-safety committee, Australian Institute of Medical Scientist, Australasian Association of Clinical Biochemists, Human Genetic Society of Australasia, Molecular Genetic society of Australia and Endocrine Society of Australia.
