Biography

Peng graduated from Shenyang Pharmaceutical University in 2010 and was majored in pharmaceutics. He came the the U.S. for graduate school and received his Ph.D. degree in microbiology from Kansas State University in 2016. His dissertational research was focused on to investigate the molecular interactions between viral pathogens and their hosts, and how these interactions shape the evolution of both sides. He discovered that a rabbit-specific pathogen myxoma virus, which is currently extensively studied for its promising potential in oncolytic therapy for human cancers, specifically inhibits an antiviral protein PKR from rabbit species, but not any other mammalian species. His finding was later published in the Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences as a direct submission. He joined the lab of Paul Bieniasz and is currently investigating novel strategies for HIV-1 vaccine development.
