Biography

Dr. Andrew S. Mount, PhD, is an Associate Professor at Clemson University in the Department of Biological Sciences, College of Sciences. In 2003, he founded and now directs the Okeanos Research Laboratory. Which is dedicated to understanding the material aspects of marine invertebrate organisms from a molecular and cellular biology perspective. The laboratory has contributed to the field of biomineralization, including; the discovery of specialized circulating cells in the oyster that are responsible for producing calcite crystals for shell formation (Science 304, 297 (2004)), describing the molecular genetics of shell formation at a genomic level (Nature 490, 49 (2012)), and the discovery of specialized cells at the mineralization front deliver crystals, proteins and lipids viaan exosome-like mechanism resulting in the simultaneous production of complex shell layers (JEMBE 463,8 (2015). Okeanos led research in the field of biofouling revealed that the adrenergic system of larval marine invertebrates is crucial for settlement (JEMBE, 394, 63 (2010) &JEMBE 416,153 (2012)), and that barnacle cyprids produce both lipids and proteins to form their adhesive plaques (Nature Communications 5, 4414 (2014)). The labs primary research tools are confocal and multi-photon optical microscopes as well as advanced electron microscopy techniques. He has a wide range of research interests and participates and advises on many ongoing research projects in the fields of neuroscience, cancer and metabolism. He is an experienced associate editor and is dedicated to helping authors publish the highest quality manuscript possible.
