Biography

Comincini Sergio is an Italian researcher, head of Functional Oncogenomics laboratory and his research is mainly focused on developing anticancer preclinical models in astrocytomas and on the functionality of the autophagy process in celiac disease models. He has a broad background in molecular genetics, with specific training and expertise in gene and protein expression studies, in programmed cell death pathways and in characterization of extracellular vesicles. As PI or co-Investigator on funded grants, he laid the groundwork for the proposed research by developing in vitro and in vivo novel anticancer strategies for glial tumors In addition, he successfully administered the projects (e.g. staffing, budget), collaborated with other researchers, and produced several peer-reviewed publications from each project. From an academic point of view, he has recently obtained National Scientific Habilitations: (call 2016) as Associate Professor in the SSD BIO/18 Genetics; (call 2018) as Associate Professor in the SSD BIO/11 Molecular Biology.

Research Interests

1. (1998-present) Molecular biology of human astrocytic tumor: expression studies of the doppel gene; involvement of the prion gene in the regulation of autophagic cell death in vitro and in vivo; identification of microRNAs modulating autophagy and radiation responses in glioblastoma; development of autophagy modulation strategies in glioblastoma cancer stem cells
2. (2011-present) Studies of the autophagy process and exosomes function in astrocytic tumors; effect of gluten-digested peptides on the functionality of the autophagy process in celiac disease models
3. (2020-present) Development of photodynamic therapy in preclinical anticancer strategies of astrocytic tumors
