Biography

Gianfranco D Alpini Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Systems Biology and Translational Medicine. Cholangiocyte growth/repair is critical for the maintenance of biliary homeostasis and secretory function during the pathogenesis of cholestatic liver diseases such as primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). Both diseases are characterized by inflammatory destruction of cholangiocytes with loss/regrowth of bile ducts leading to cholestasis and further liver damage, promoting fibrosis, cirrhosis, and ultimately, liver failure. His research program focuses on the regulation of cholangiocyte proliferation/damage during cholangiopathies. His studies have demonstrated the key role of a number of factors such as secretin, vascular and nerve factors (expressed and secreted by cholangiocytes) in the regulation of biliary growth/damage by autocrine/paracrine mechanisms. His research interests also include determining the interactions that occur between cholangiocytes and hepatic stellate cells in the biliary microenvironment during both cholestasis.
