Biography

Dr. Porche is one of UTMD Anderson’s most dedicated and committed faculty members when it comes to patient care and making cancer history. She has crossed many barriers and continues to promote and demonstrate the core values that the institution stands for. In 2006, Vivian Porche, M.D., was promoted to professor of anesthesiology in the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine, becoming the first African–American female professor in MD Anderson's history. She made deliberate choices at many stages in her life. Initially, she wanted to be a surgeon; but decided instead to become an anesthesiologist which has afforded her quality family time and a richly rewarding professional life. She credits the support she receives at home for being able to balance being a physician, participating in both family activities and professional commitments. She acknowledges that the housekeeper and the nanny were necessities, not luxuries. Making school activities of her children a priority has meant keeping a creative and flexible schedule, and above all, forgiving herself. She contends that Shakespeare said it best, "to thine own self be true". Dr. Porche joined the staff at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in 1990. During her years of practice she has specialized in pediatric anesthesiology, pain management and sedation for procedures. She has been an active member of various institutional committees including being appointed the director of diversity for minority faculty and a member of the Faculty Senate, and participating in search committees for pediatrics, anesthesiology and plastic and reconstructive surgery. She has been a member of the Acute Pain Service since 1990, and served as its director from 1995-1999. During this time, she started the Anesthesia sedation service, and was its director from 1995-2001. While director, she chaired the Sedation and Procedure Committee from its inception for the next five years. Dr. Porche was named as the medical director of anesthesia for the new Proton Therapy Center and she has written extensively on general anesthesia, pediatric anesthesia, pain management and sedation. During her "leisure" time, she is an active wife and mother of three.
