Biography

Dr. Yuyou Duan earned his PhD degree from Jilin University in China, and completed
his postdoctoral training at Cornell University and University of Californian (UC) Davis
Medical Center from 1999 to 2004. Currently Dr. Duan is an Associate Professor at UC
Davis Medical Center, his research interests and expertise include stem cells and
regenerative medicine, liver injury and regeneration, gene- and cell-based therapies for
the treatment of human diseases, and the tumorigenesis by cancer stem cells. Dr. Duan
has developed highly efficient differentiation protocols and successfully differentiated
human embryonic stem cells (ESC), human induced pluripotent stem cells, monkey
ESC, human endodermal progenitor cells, and mesenchymal stem cells, towards
metabolically functioning hepatocytes with homogenous population, and developed
xeno-free and feeder-free conditions for culturing and expanding clinical-grade human
ESC, and generated scaled-up clinical-grade human ESC using a bioreactor under such
conditions. Dr. Duan is moving human ESC-derived hepatocytes into pharmaceutical
and clinical applications. Dr. Duan has isolated, identified and characterized human
cancer stem cells, and revealed the origin of a cancer stem cell type, moreover, he
found that a single of oncogenic mesenchymal stem cells not only produces primary
tumor, but also forms the metastatic tumors in different organs in animal model. In
addition, Dr. Duan has successfully established in vitro clonogenical cultures of human
cancer stem cells for banking and research, and first experimentally demonstrated that
the fusion is one of approaches for the formation of human cancer stem cells.
