Asgeir R Helgason Born in Iceland 1957. Studied psychology and practical journalism at the University of Iceland. Worked for several years in cancer prevention at the Icelandic Cancer Society. PhD work on prostate cancer treatment and quality of life at Karolinska Institute in Sweden, followed by clinical training in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. Associate Professor in Psychology at Karolinska Institute, Sweden and Reykjavik University, Iceland. Research group leader at Karolinska Institutet. Head Psychologist at a research unit, Stockholm County Council, parallel with a position (University Lector) in Social Medicine at Karolinska Institute. Main research areas include population based studies on sexual function and emotional isolation in middle aged and elderly men in general and prostate cancer patients in particular. Also including patient trade-off, weighing life expectancy against quality of life. Smoking cessation and tobacco prevention has been a parallel area of research, including the evaluation and development of telephone based treatment for tobacco and alcohol addiction. Assessing treatment intensity, outcome and cost effectiveness.
