Biography

Cruz Sebastiao is an Angolan principal investigator at CISA (Centro de Investigacao em Saúde de Angola) and INIS (Instituto Nacional de Investigaca
o em Saúde), both located in Luanda, the capital city of Angola, where he has been since 2020. He received his Ph.D. in Biomedicine from NMS|FCM of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL) in 2021, in Portugal. He participated as a postdoctoral fellow in the ENVOLVE Ciencia PALOP program, funded by Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (FCG), in Portugal, where he was part of the HIV/AIDS and Bioinformatics laboratory of the IHMT of the UNL in 2021, in Lisbon, Portugal. He has experience in HIV sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. He is able to prepare results for publication and write his own manuscripts. He has a very close collaboration with a public health research team in Portugal. He is also familiar with data analysis and statistics. He has more than 30 scientific publications in the fields of HIV/Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Arboviruses/Vector-borne Diseases and SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19, which have been published in international, peer-reviewed, impact-relevant scientific journals, such as, The Lancet Infectious Diseases, Journal of Medical Virology, PLOS ONE, Emerging Infectious Diseases, Tropical Medicine and Infectious Disease, Malaria Journal, AIDS Reviews, Health Science Reports, Journal of Infectious Diseases and Diagnosis, PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases, and others. His current research project explores viral and host factors related to HIV-1 infection and molecular epidemiology of emerging infectious diseases (EID) in Angola. Also, he is working on optimizing and reducing the cost of HIV-1 drug resistance surveillance in Angola based on Next Generation Sequencing (Oxford Nanopore Technologies).
