Biography

Aravinthkumar Jayabalan research career focuses on identifying the molecular mechanisms involved in the formation of one of the RNA/protein-rich biomolecular condensates in the cytoplasm called Stress Granules (SGs). A variety of factors are essential to maintain regular SG dynamics, including post-translation modification—conjugation of small peptides on target proteins. In his PhD research, he identified that NEDDylation—the addition of NEDD8 onto target proteins—plays a crucial role in SG assembly during oxidative stress. Proper SG dynamics is essential to keep the cells alive and any dysregulation in SG dynamics leads to a variety of diseases such as cancer, viral infection, and neurodegeneration. For example, SGs are usually a common target by many viruses during the late stages of infection—the mechanism behind is largely unknown. Therefore, delineating the molecular driving forces involved in SG dynamics during viral infection is thus crucial for developing broad-spectrum antiviral therapeutics.
