Biography

Yu Chen is a molecular and cellular biologist working at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute/University of California, Berkeley. She received M.S. in Statistics and Ph.D. in Cell and Developmental Biology from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Her research engages various advanced microscopy and NGS techniques, combined with cell biology tools to elucidate the mechanisms of gene regulation at the molecular level, and to understand gene misregulation in the context of cancer. Her Ph.D. work established a novel immunostaining-based genomic approach called "TSA-seq" to map the three-dimensional genome organization and discovered nuclear speckles as the organizers of the active genome. Her Postdoc work discovered that in addition to the structured DNA-binding domain, the intrinsically disordered regions in transcription factors also contribute to chromatin binding and gene regulatory specificity. Her current research interests lie in developing single-cell and spatial proteomics/transcriptomics methods and data analysis using machine learning and deep learning algorithms.
