German L Velez Reyes received his B.S. from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus, where he performed research under the guidance of Dr. Adriana Baez in the tumor biology lab, investigating the incidence of HPV16 in head and neck cancers. He later trained at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Novartis Institute for Biomedical Research under Dr. Aron Jaffe, where he developed tools for the targeted discovery of colorectal cancer. He completed his MD/PhD at the University of Minnesota Medical Scientist Training Program and performed his thesis under the mentorship of Dr. David Largaespada. Focusing on neurofibromatosis Type 1-related malignancies, he developed screens for the discovery of tumor suppressor genes and oncogenes. This work has contributed to the search of targeted therapies for the treatment of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors. Now he continues his scientific and clinical training at the University of Minnesota, where he works to understand the genetic intricacies and how chromatin interactions influence the progression of fibrotic diseases as he continues to train as a Pulmonary and Critical Care Physician.
