Biography

Cristina Romero Lopez obtained her PhD degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology by the University of Granada in 2005. The main objective was the development of new tools based on RNA molecules, which could act as inactivators of the hepatitis C virus, HCV. This study led to the identification of potent anti-HCV RNA molecules. Since then, her scientific interests moved from the development of inhibitors based on RNA molecules to the identification of conserved functional RNA domains in viral genomes and their involvement in the development of viral propagation and pathogenesis. These studies describe the existence of a network of RNA-RNA interactions capable of circularizing the HCV genome. The novelty of this finding lies in the identification of a dynamic information transfer system, essential for the progression of the infective cycle and capable of functioning independently of protein factors.
