Mbogo George Williams is originally from Ugandan Scientist based in Melbourne Australia at the Burnet Institute of Medical Research. He received basic training as a Medical Laboratory Practitioner, from Makerere University and initially worked in the Uganda public health laboratories. He subsequently undertook research on WHO/TDR funded Human African Trypanosomiasis project. He also pioneered establishment of the first cGMP certified Vaccine production Biotech Company in sub-Saharan Africa under Prof. Vinand Nantulya (formerly at Global Fund). Simultaneously, he was awarded the prestigious Forgaty International Fellowship under Prof. Philip Rosenthal from the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) to study anti-malarial drug resistance in Uganda, following a MSc in Molecular Biology from Makerere University. He then embarked on doctoral studies with Ass/Prof. Hamsa Puthalakath and Prof. Brian Smith at La Trobe University in Melbourne Australia. During his PhD, George identified new therapeutics for Heart failure, a disease associated with excessive stress hormone-induced attrition of contractile cells. He identified 4 drug classes that target the pro-apoptotic protein Bim, without affecting overall hormonal compensation. These drugs offer superior benefits compared to the overprescribed but ineffective conventional β-blockers. Following completion of his PhD in 2017, he was recruited at the Burnet Institute by Prof. Gilda Tachedjian to advance discovery of new HIV-1 treatment in an attempt to accelerate HIV elimination by 2030.
