Shamala Devi Sekaran main expertise having worked in academia since her postgraduate days from 1976 to 1988 as a tutor and then from 1988 to 2016 as a lecturer in University Malaya where she obtained her basic degrees (1975, 1976), Masters (1980), PhD (1986) and then went on to be Associate Professor (1996) and Professor (2003). During those years she had grants totaling more than RM9 million, published 188 papers with Wos citations of 2256, and an h-index of 22. To date 20 Masters and 20 PhDs have graduated under her supervision. Her main areas of research were on Dengue, mainly diagnostics, clinical research and drug discovery/antiviral. Other areas include other viruses, bacteria such as Salmonella typhi, Leptospirosis, Rickettssia and also antibiotic resistance and the mechanisms and drug development in Staphylococci aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Acinetobacter baumanii. From her research she had received awards for kits developed and also own more than 20 patents. From these 3 kits were commercialized. Her main expertise is in Immunology and microbiology teaching to medical undergraduates and dental undergraduates (pre-clinical years) and biomedical sciences. Teaching also included lectures and tutorials for postgraduate medical courses held at UMMC. Administratively she had been appointed Director of the WHO Collaborating centre from 2003 to 2007, a member of the faculty committee for postgraduate degrees and vivas, adhoc committee for promotions at faculty level, faculty counselor for undergraduates and staff of the faculty, coordinator for the MBBS, Dental and Biomedical courses and was Head of the virology diagnostic laboratory. Apart from these she is on the editorial board for a number of journals, consultant to 3 diagnostic companies and Chief Science Officer for a local R&D company BiovalenceSdn Bhd. She had also organized a number of workshops on dengue diagnosis, immunology courses, and supervision courses as well as on Thesis/Viva defense. She had been appointed as internal and external examiner for thesis’s both locally and internationally and as reviewers for journal papers and grant applications both locally and internationally. She had been invited to speak at many local and international conferences as plenary and oral presentor. She is involved with her local BEC church 9as BEC chief), Kiwanis Kuala Lumpur (as community services director) and her residents association (Protem committee, Treasurer and President).
